Thx for The Memories Tournament

2/10/25 – The 1968 Tigers Roar with Fraasch!

Sixteen players chose sixteen different teams, honoring 30 former MLB players who passed away in 2024, in the most unique APBA regional baseball tournament of the year. Five new players (Jim Fraasch, Jim Saska, Bob Brennan, Jack Dolan, and Rodney Woodward) joined the tournament this year. Pete Rose, Luis Tiant, Merv Rettenmund, Orlando Cepeda, and Rocky Colavito were honored by two teams each. The 1954 NY Giants (Mays/Alton) and the 1985 LA Dodgers (Valenzuela/Woodward) were represented in the tournament. The 1969 New York Mets had the most honored players with five (DiLauro, Harrelson, Grote, Kranepool, and McAndrew).

This year saw each team play 17 games from the comfort of their own APBA room. The 1962 San Francisco Giants (12-5, veteran Bill Geresy), 1968 Detroit Tigers (12-4, Jim Fraasch), 1969 Baltimore Orioles (12-5, Bill Sagle), and the 1977 Kansas City Royals (9-8, Bob Brennan) won their divisions and advanced into the playoffs. The Tigers swept the Royals and the Giants (last year’s tournament winners) beat the Orioles in 4 games. The finals were set. The 1962 San Francisco Giants would return to the finals for a second consecutive year. They won the tournament last year, honoring pitcher Bob Bolin, to take home the Memories Memorial Cup. The 1968 Detroit Tigers had the best winning percentage of any team in the tournament. The finals series was played on a paid Zoom account and opened to all tournament members who wanted to watch. Bill Geresy has played in every TFTM tournament and this was the first time he reached the playoffs.

The finals saw the Tiger first baseman Norm Cash win the MVP and Manager Jim Fraasch walk away with a 4-2 series win. Somehow, the 1962 San Francisco Giants slapped around starting pitcher Denny McLain twice, but struggled against starting pitchers Wilson and Lolich.

Congratulations to Jim Fraasch and his 1968 Detroit Tigers for winning the tournament and a special thank you to Tony Stevens for coordinating and directing the event. SIM AUCTION TOURNAMENTS

On December 22, 2024, five General Managers met via ZOOM to conduct an auction based on the players from the best 5 teams of 1977 – the Yankees, Royals, Red Sox, Phillies and Dodgers. A few days after the auction BBW was used to run simulations of entire seasons with the newly created teams. The team that wins four seasons wins the Sim Auction World Series! Andy Palomino’s team emerged victorious, winning 4 seasons and averaging 95 wins per season. Congratulations to Paul Gilbert who finished a strong second, averaging 88 wins in only his 2nd Sim Auction.

If you are interested in participating in one of these sim auctions (which will be held about every two weeks through February 2025), please contact Andy at baseballsimauctions@yahoo.com.

DELAWARE VALLEY APBA BASEBALL (DVAL) TOURNAMENT

On a beautiful Saturday morning in the Delaware Valley, Twenty-four participants arrived at The Concordia Lutheran Church in Wilmington, DE for the 4th Annual DVAL Tournament.
The 24 teams were divided into 4 divisions and played 9 games each in pool play. Team selection for the DVAL tournament was any team from 1946 to present, except for 1981, 1994 and 2020. The division winners were as follows:

CHRIS SHORT DIVISION – Conrad Judy, who went 7-2 with the 2017 Washington Nationals
DALLAS GREEN DIVISION – Bob Brennan who went 8-1 with the 1948 Cleveland Indians
DAVE & DERRICK MAY DIVISION – Eric Moore who went 6-3 with the 2004 St. Louis Cardinals
DELINO DeSHIELDS DIVISION – Bob DeMarco who went 6-3 with the 1977 Philadelphia Phillies, winning on a tie breaker over B.J. Wanlund’s 2016 Chicago Cubs.

In the first semi-final, the 2017 Nationals and the 1948 Indians battled to a scoreless tie through 11 innings until the Nationals pushed 2 runs across in the top of the 12th. In the other semi-final, the 1977 Phillies topped the 2004 Cardinals 6-2.

The 2017 Nationals and 1977 Phillies split the first two games of the World Series with the Nationals winning game 1 by a score of 8-3 and the 1977 Phillies extending the series to game 3 courtesy of a 7-3 win. The deciding World Series game was an 8-7 Washington Nationals win and the DVAL championship title.

Congratulations to Conrad Judy and the 2017 Nationals for winning the 2024 DVAL Tournament Trophy and to Bob DeMarco and the 1977 Phillies for their deep tournament run.

Lastly, and most importantly, between donations and matching gifts, a total of $580 was raised for the ALS Foundation.
