3/11/2025 – John Duke is The King of Tempe
The 1st Annual APBA Tempe Spring Training Tournament took place at Dave and Buster’s in Tempe, Arizona. Eight players competed with teams from 2000-2024 (except 2020) with a winning percentage of .500 to.525. A 5-game schedule was played. The four teams advancing to the playoffs included: John Duke (2000 Red Sox), Kenn Gorr (2001 White Sox), Rick Guzman (2023 Cubs), and Rip Lowe (2023 Diamondbacks). In the first round of the playoffs, the Red Sox defeated the Cubs 3-1 and the 2003 D-Backs beat the 2001 White Sox 3-1.
In the Championship, the 2000 Red Sox and 2023 D-Backs went back and forth. In the bottom of the 10th, Brian Daubach hit a Grand Slam to win the game 9-5 and the tournament championship for Duke and his Red Sox. Congratulations to APBA Hall of Famer John Duke on another tournament championship. John not only claimed the crown but won a free entry into the 2025 Vegas APBA Championships in July. Thank you to Chris White for organizing and directing this inaugural spring training event.
Great Michigan APBA Baseball Tournament
3/11/25 – Hernandez’s 1928 Athletics Prevail
The 11th Annual GMABT is in the books! The GMABT had 58 managers under the direction of Pastor Rich Zawadzki and under the observation of S.T. Patrick from Sports SIM Magazine.
After a full day of competition, the elite eight were as follows. In the NL, the final four were the 1922 Browns (Dick Glisinski), the 1930 Cubs (Dominick Rutherford), the 1970 Twins (Lind Pratt), and the 1990 Reds (Bob Winengar). In the AL, the final four were the 1928 Athletics (Michael Hernandez), the 1947 Cardinals (Phillip Yike), the 1971 Athletics (David Dawn), and the 1987 Blue Jays (Mike Coon Jr.). In the league finals, it was the 1930 Cubs edging the 1922 Browns 8-7 in the NL while in the AL the 1928 Athletics downed the 1987 Blue Jays 5-3. In the finals, Michael Hernandez and his 1928 Athletics prevailed over Dominick Rutherford and his 1930 Cubs two games to one by scores of 0-2, 10-7, and 8-2.
Congratulations to Michael Hernandez and his 1928 Athletics, who went a remarkable 12-1, and to Dominick Rutherford, who went an unbelievable 11-2 in his very first tournament! Thanks to Pastor Rich for serving as the tournament director. Next year, the GMABT will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026. The theme will be any MLB team from 1955-2015 that did not participate in the World Series that season.
The Charlie Fouche APBA Shootout
3/4/25 – The 2025 Charlie Fouche APBA Shootout began with roll call and a review of tournament rules. The tournament theme was 2005-2015 non-playoff teams. One of the previously perfect attendees never showed up. There was concern for his whereabouts, but after a couple of days, they received the response, “He’s Fine. He just decided that he wanted to do something else.” Fortunately, everyone else showed up and as an emergency fill-in, one of the tournament directors was able to roll APBA Baseball Games all day.
John Kalous – 2005 Athletics (8-2), Mike Kehrer – 2008 Cardinals, Ken Wyks – 2005 – Indians, and Amy Wyks – 2010 Cardinals (all 7-3) made the playoffs without any tie-breaker games needed. As the top seed, John Kalous was able to select his opponent and immediately lost two games to the 2019 National Convention Champion Amy Wyks. Mike Kehrer ran the gauntlet of Wyks by defeating Ken, then his sister-in-law Amy, in the finals for the Championship to avenge his loss in the 2019 APBA National Convention Finals.
The 2026 Charlie Fouche APBA Shootout will be held on February 21, 2026 in the Hamilton Room of the Embassy Suites by Hilton at 2321 Lifestyle Way, Chattanooga TN 37421. The 2026 tournament theme will be 1980-1989 teams with a winning percentage below .540.
February Sim Auction Tournament
2/28/25 – On February 16th, five General Managers met via ZOOM to conduct an auction based on the best seasons of Hall of Famers McGriff, Wagner, Rolen, Sabathia and Halladay. The teams used in the auction were the 1989 Blue Jays, 1999 Astros, 2004 Cardinals, 2008 Brewers and 2010 Phillies. BBW was then used to run simulations of entire seasons. They team that wins four seasons wins the Sim Auction World Series! This was a very competitive simulation with eight simulated seasons required to determine a winner! Ultimately, Michael Danes emerged victorious, winning his first Sim Auction championship, averaging 90 wins per season on the strength of terrific hitting, excellent fielding, superior relief pitching and adequate starters. If you are interested in participating in a sim auction, please contact Andy at baseballsimauctions@yahoo.com. Andy has a YouTube channel (Baseball Sim Auctions), and there you can view and/or download complete simulation results.
Thx for The Memories Tournament
2/10/25 – The 1968 Tigers Roar with Fraasch!
Sixteen players chose sixteen different teams, honoring 30 former MLB players who passed away in 2024, in the most unique APBA regional baseball tournament of the year. Five new players (Jim Fraasch, Jim Saska, Bob Brennan, Jack Dolan, and Rodney Woodward) joined the tournament this year.
Each team played 17 games from the comfort of their own APBA room. The 1962 San Francisco Giants (12-5, veteran Bill Geresy), 1968 Detroit Tigers (12-4, Jim Fraasch), 1969 Baltimore Orioles (12-5, Bill Sagle), and the 1977 Kansas City Royals (9-8, Bob Brennan) won their divisions and advanced into the playoffs. The Tigers swept the Royals and the Giants (last year’s tournament winners) beat the Orioles in 4 games. The 1962 San Francisco Giants would return to the finals for a second consecutive year, having won the tournament last year. The 1968 Detroit Tigers had the best winning percentage of any team in the tournament. The finals series was played on a paid Zoom account and opened to all tournament members who wanted to watch. Bill Geresy has played in every TFTM tournament and this was the first time he reached the playoffs.
The finals saw the Tiger first baseman Norm Cash win the MVP and Manager Jim Fraasch walk away with a 4-2 series win. Somehow, the 1962 San Francisco Giants slapped around starting pitcher Denny McLain twice, but struggled against starting pitchers Wilson and Lolich.
Congratulations to Jim Fraasch for winning the tournament and thank you to Tony Stevens for coordinating and directing the event. Anyone interested in knowing more about next year’s Thanks For The Memories Tournament, please feel free to contact Tony at apbatony@gmail.com.
