DELAWARE VALLEY APBA BASEBALL (DVAL) TOURNAMENT
On a beautiful Saturday morning in the Delaware Valley, Twenty-Four (24) participants arrived at The Concordia Lutheran Church in Wilmington, DE for the 4th Annual DVAL Tournament.
The 24 teams were divided into 4 divisions and played 9 games each in pool play. Team selection for the DVAL tournament was any team from 1946 to present, except for 1981, 1994 and 2020. The division winners were as follows:
CHRIS SHORT DIVISION – Conrad Judy, who went 7-2 with the 2017 Washington Nationals
DALLAS GREEN DIVISION – Bob Brennan who went 8-1 with the 1948 Cleveland Indians
DAVE & DERRICK MAY DIVISION – Eric Moore who went 6-3 with the 2004 St. Louis Cardinals
DELINO DeSHIELDS DIVISION – Bob DeMarco who went 6-3 with the 1977 Philadelphia Phillies, winning on a tie breaker over B.J. Wanlund’s 2016 Chicago Cubs.
In the first semi-final, the 2017 Nationals and the 1948 Indians battled to a scoreless tie through 11 innings until the Nationals pushed 2 runs across in the top of the 12th. In the other semi-final, the 1977 Phillies topped the 2004 Cardinals 6-2.
The 2017 Nationals and 1977 Phillies split the first two games of the World Series with the Nationals winning game 1 by a score of 8-3 and the 1977 Phillies extending the series to game 3 courtesy of a 7-3 win.
The deciding World Series game was to be a pitchers duel between two Grade A aces, Stephen Strasburg for the Nationals and Steve Carlton for the Phillies…but it was anything but. The Phillies scored three times in the top of the 1st inning on a Luzinski homerun. In the bottom half of the inning the Nationals responded with a Zimmerman two-run double. In the next two innings the Nationals moved to put the game away scoring three runs in the 2nd on homeruns by Kendrick and Murphy and one run in the 3rd on a Lind RBI single. After 3 innings the Nationals were up 7-2. But the Phillies were not done. In the top of the 5th inning they scored three times on a lead off Homerun by McCarver and and a two-run blast by Hebner. The Phillies then tied the game 7-7 in the top of the 6th on a Boone lead off homerun. In the bottom of the 7th inning the Nationals started with a leadoff homerun of their own by Kendrick to regain a one run lead. Madden then closed out the 8-7 Washington Nationals win and the DVAL championship title with a 9th inning save.
Congratulations to Conrad Judy and the 2017 Nationals for winning the 2024 DVAL Tournament Trophy and to Bob DeMarco and the 1977 Phillies for their deep tournament run.
Lastly, and most importantly, between donations and matching gifts, a total of $580 was raised for the ALS Foundation.
LINDA B. SCHULZ MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
On a crisp clear Autumn Saturday morning, Fifty participants gathered at the Slippery Rock Township Community Center to celebrate Linda B. Schulz’s life and play some APBA…a game she loved for her boys Ken and Darren to play.
The 50 participants were organized into eight (8) divisions in which to compete. Participants came from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, New York, Delaware, West Virginia, Virginia, and the Province of Ontario. Following pool play of eight games the following division winners emerged: Greg Wells (1968 Giants), Bob McCurdy (1963 Giants), John Mikulas (1940 Cardinals), Clay Bauserman (1997 Indians), John Cress (1997 Rockies), Mark McDonel (1968 Pirates), Norm Zavela (1984 Phillies), and Logan Schulz (1996 Mariners). In the final game of the championship series, the1963 Giants maintained a 1-0 lead through 7-1/2 innings on a Hiller RBI single scoring Alou. But in the bottom of the 8th inning the 1968 Giants Hunt and Mays each singled before McCovery slammed a three-run Homerun leading to yet another Greg Wells Regional Championship with a 3-1 win and overall 12-1 record on the day. This was Greg’s second consecutive LBS Tournament Championship. Greg won a $100 APBA Gift Certificate and promptly donated it to a young APBA player who was attending the event. Bob McCurdy won a $50 APBA gift certificate and John Mikulas and Clay Bauserman each a $25 APBA gift certificate.
Between entry fee apportionment and an on-site raffle, $900 was raised for the American Diabetes Association in the name of Linda B. Schulz. Ken and Darren Schulz and their wives put on another fine event…their largest yet! Congratulations to the Schulz’s…your Mom was looking down, smiling, and beaming with pride for a good job well done. It was also nice to see Mr. Schulz in attendance at the event.

As a bonus, long time APBA veteran, APBA Hall of Famer, and the original 1973 APBA Convention Tournament Director Pete Simonelli made a “guest” appearance and stayed for about five hours enjoying the action taking place.
Jim Fraasch wishes to thank all those who participated and Pete Simonelli for appearing at this year’s TCABT XXII Tournament. Jim also announced that the Spring TCABT XXIII Tournament will be held on Saturday April 5, 2025…so save the date on your calendars. A special thanks to Jim Fraasch for coordinating and directing the twenty-second edition of The TCABT Tournament. Jim also said he has a feeling that the Ohtani sweepstakes will be in play for the 2024 Dodgers.
ROLLAPBALOOZA
The week leading up to RollAPBAlooza “The Jim Rice Seasons” was touch-and-go if the tournament would be played or canceled because of Hurricane Helene. By the time Friday rolled around, the tournament was on and it was a lottery to see who would be able to attend. When all was said and done, six (6) players made the trip (Chuck Sorce and Jack Dolan that morning) and enjoyed a round robin of 15 games — the most of any in person face-to-face regional tournament in the APBA Community.
This tournament honored Boston Red Sox outfielder and Hall of Famer Jim Rice of Anderson, South Carolina. Chuck Sorce’s 1982 Milwaukee Brewers started off hot and never looked back, going 12-3. The other over .500 team was Co-Tournament Director Marty Benjamin’s 1986 Boston Red Sox (8-6), the only entry with Jim Rice on the roster. The ’86 Red Sox snuck into the finals when Andy Rumple’s 1975 Cincinnati Reds (7-8) lost 13-14 to Tony Stevens’ 1985 Toronto Blue Jays (7-8). Rodney Woodward’s 1985 LA Dodgers (6-9) and Jack Dolan’s 1986 NY Mets (5-10) rounded out the tournament. Chuck’s Brewers swept Marty’s BoSox to become the first winner of the RollAPBAlooza, Carolina Style regional tournament. Jim Cicilia was on his way to the tournament when he stopped overnight in Asheville, NC. Little did he know, by the time he woke the roads would be flooded, there was no way of leaving the city, no power, and no cell phone service. The APBA community was kicked into high gear to make sure Jim was alright and not harmed. A special thanks to Tony Stevens, Randy Coryer, John Cochrane, and Rebecca Peterson for “taking care of their own”. By the end of the day, Jim was finally able to be contacted and informed us he was alright. As a special “good try getting there driving through a hurricane” award, Jim is now granted 5 years of fee-free RollAPBAlooza tournaments.
Chuck Sorce has also taken a commanding lead in the Great Southern Triple Crown contest rolling a 19-6 record into the final tournament before the winner is crowned on Saturday, October 12th at the Old Dominion Tournament in Hopewell, VA.
Next year’s RollAPBAlooza, Carolina Style will feature Hickory, North Carolina’s own Madison Bumgarner’s career from 2009 through 2023 (excluding the 2020 season). We will also be moving the tournament to Bluffton, SC and playing at Okatie Ale House sometime in October 2025. Hope to see you all there!
THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRIPLE CROWN OF APBA REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS
Chuck Sorce walks away with the first and only Great Southern Triple Crown of APBA Regionals trophy and prize. Chuck had a difficult time getting to the Old Dominion tournament as he ran into some trouble on route and had to turn back. That gave an opening … albeit a small one … for Andy Rumple. Andy could not capitalize on it as he too was unable to make the Old Dominion tournament, the final tournament of the contest.
Chuck takes home (when I see him next) a beautiful wooden baseball and stand, along with a minimalist wallet made from actual baseball leather. Rumor has it, the wallet is made from the glove of Sidd Finch, the former fictitious NY Mets pitching phenom and flake.
Finally, this will be the last Great Southern Triple Crown of APBA Regionals because we are pleased to announce the addition of Steve Ryan’s/Mike Kerher’s Charlie Fouche Chattanooga Shoot-out to the contest making four tournaments. Therefore, the new contest’s name becomes THE GRAND SLAM OF SOUTHERN REGIONALS!
THE GRAND SLAM OF SOUTHERN REGIONALS!
This is a free and additional add-on contest where the APBA player accumulates wins from across all four of the southern APBA baseball tournament regionals.
The four Southern APBA Regionals in 2025 will be:
1) Charlie Fouche’s Chattanooga Shoot-Out (02/2025) in Chattanooga, TN
2) Shoeless Joe Jackson Dead Ball Tournament (08/2025) in Greenville, SC
3) Old Dominion Tournament (09/2025)
4) RollAPBAlooza: The Madison Bumgarner Seasons (omit the 2020 season) (10/2025) moving to beautiful Bluffton, SC (hoping no hurricane this time)
